The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) is one of the most precious treasures of Zakynthos and a true symbol of the island’s natural heritage. The island is home to one of the largest loggerhead nesting populations in the Mediterranean, mainly concentrated along the sandy shores of Gerakas. From May to October each year, these magnificent creatures return to the warm waters to nest and lay their eggs, following an ancient natural cycle. To protect this fragile ecosystem, the area has been designated as the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, ensuring the safety and preservation of the turtles and their habitat.
